Long-term rates are often lower
Tax rates and the short/long-term threshold vary by country. This is a general estimate, not tax advice — confirm with a local tax professional.
How capital gains are calculated
A capital gain is the difference between what you sell crypto for (proceeds) and what you paid for it (cost basis):
- Cost basis = buy price × quantity
- Proceeds = sell price × quantity
- Capital gain = proceeds − cost basis
Example: you buy 1 BTC for $20,000 and sell it for $60,000. Your cost basis is $20,000, proceeds are $60,000, and the capital gain is $40,000.
Short-term vs. long-term
How long you held the asset decides whether a gain is taxed as short-term or long-term. In most countries, assets held more than one year qualify for lower long-term capital gains rates; assets held a year or less are taxed at your ordinary income rate. The exact threshold and rates differ by country, so check your local rules.
What counts as a taxable event
- Selling crypto for fiat — taxable.
- Swapping one crypto for another — usually treated as a sale.
- Spending crypto — usually taxable.
- Buying and holding — not taxable until you sell.
- Moving between your own wallets — not a sale.
This calculator uses the simple average cost of a single buy. If you made many purchases, your true cost basis may need FIFO or specific identification — a full crypto tax tool handles that automatically.
Frequently asked questions
When is selling crypto a taxable event?
In most jurisdictions, selling crypto for fiat, swapping one crypto for another, or spending it triggers a taxable event. Buying and holding does not. Rules vary, so confirm with your local tax authority.
How is my capital gain calculated?
Capital gain equals your sale proceeds minus your cost basis — what you paid for the coins, including fees. This calculator uses the simple average cost of a single buy, not FIFO or specific identification.
Can I deduct crypto losses?
In many countries, capital losses can offset capital gains, and some allow a limited deduction against ordinary income with the rest carried forward. The rules vary, so check your local tax rules.
